A faultless magic performance frequently leaves the audiences perplexed and gives them a misconception: the illusionist has achieved the impossible. Yet, as known to all, illusions of magic are produced entirely through mechanical devices.
【注意】(i) faultless = perfect = immaculate 完美的
注意:fault = mistake = error 失誤、錯誤
I was enchanted by her magical voice.
(iii) leave / keep + 人 + adj.
Just leave the door open.
例:Don't ever keep me waiting.
(iv) perplex = confuse = baffle = puzzle 使...
perplex = per- (完全) + plex (彎曲、扭曲) ==> (vt.)使...迷惑
(vii) the impossible 是「the + adj.」的結構,表示「整體的一堆人或事」,如 the poor、the good...等。
(viii) as known to all = as is known to everybody
As you know, cats are curious.
As (is) said by Don, girls cannot be trusted.
(ix) 注意是 be known to N. (為...所知),而不是 be known by N.。
(x) illusion = il- (in-,在...之內) + lus (玩耍、玩弄) + -ion (名詞) ==> (n.c)幻覺

On the stage, magicians resemble omnipotent glamorous superstars, who can vanish or transfer an object, levitate human bodies, or transform a human into a beast -- all that with great ease.
【注意】(i) resemble N. = look like N. 類似...
resemble = re- (一再) + sem (相同) + -ble (形容詞轉動詞字尾) ==> (vt.)類似
(ii) omnipotent = omni- (全部) + pot (能力) + -ent (形容詞字尾) ==> (adj.)
(iii) glamor (n.U)魅力(= appeal = attraction)
How can a person vanish in broad daylight?
levitate = levit (抬、輕) + -ate (及物動詞) ==> (vt.)使...升起
She seemed to have been transformed overnight.
She came to my house, and that quickly.
(ix) with ease = easily 輕易地 --> 此處的 with 表示「以...

Still, the mystery of magic is actually far more intricate than all this, because the elaborately-designed lighting and props on the stage take advantage of blind corners of human eyesight. Moreover, a conjuror's adroit verbal skills and body language contribute to the strategy of diversion.
【注意】(i) the mystery of N. = the magic of N. ...
例:Share with me the magic of online games.
(ii) intricate = complicated = complex 複雜的
intricate = in- (之內) + tric (複雜、詭計) + -ate (形容詞字尾) ==> (adj.)錯綜複雜的
(iii) elaborate = e- (在外) + labor (勞力、費力) + -ate (形容詞字尾) ==> (adj.)
(iv) elaborately-designed = ingeniously-designed 精心設計的
類似:air-conditioning (空調設備) --> air-conditioner (冷氣機)。
(vii) take advantage of N. = make use of N. 利用...
(viii) eyesight = vision 視覺 --> 不可數名詞!
(ix) adroit = adept = proficient 熟練的
(x) verbal (adj.)
(xi) strategy = tactic 戰術、策略
(xii) divert = di- (dis-,離開) + vert (轉) ==> (vt.)轉移
同字根單字:convert、advertise、pervert、revert、adverse、averse、diverse、perverse、universe...等。

With the trend progressing, more and more magicians cross the streets, interacting warmly with citizens and making them more aware of the spices of magic performances. These street magicians, just like missionaries, shoulder the responsibility of spreading their expertise.
【注意】(i) with the trend progressing = as the trend progresses 隨著潮流的進步
補充:progress = advance = go forward 前進
The man stood there smoking.
(iv) be aware of N. = be conscious of N.
Variety is the spice of life.
(vi) street magicians = guerilla magicians 街頭魔術師
(vii) shoulder / take the responsibility of V-ing 肩負...的責任
例:A teacher shoulders the responsibility of civilizing his students.
(viii) spread = scatter = disseminate 散播

To be sure, the presentation of magic is just like variety shows, the ultimate purpose of which is to entertain audiences. However, one principle of success remains unchanged: in every field, painstaking practice is the guarantee of results.
【注意】(i) to be sure 表「誠然、固然」,後面通常會配上 but 引導的子句來對照。
例:To be sure, the salary of the job is good, but it is exhausting.
The content of the article is good, but not its presentation.
(iii) variety shows 綜藝節目
補充:interview shows 訪談節目、gourmet shows 美食節目、talent shows (才華)競賽表演、quiz shows 益智問答節目...等。
(iv) ultimate (adj.)最終的(= eventual = final)
(v) which 在此代替前面的 presentation of magic,注意不能改為 it,因為此句缺連接詞。
例:I have three brothers, all of them are friendly. (X)
修正:I have three brothers, all of whom are friendly.
(vi) entertain = amuse = please = delight 使...
His concert drew a large audience.
(viii) remain + adj.
Don remained unmarried for a long time.
The wizard took pains to conjure the dead man's spirit.
The digital camera isn't under guarantee.
