Currently in Taiwan, there is hardly anyone but receives a scam phone call or letter, as everyone is cognizant that fraudulent organizations utilize random calls to make one of the most profitable industries.
【注意】(i) currently = at present = nowadays = today 目前
He hardly hesitates in answering questions.
He contributed to hardly anything.
There is no one but likes her. = There is no one who doesn't like her.
There is no one but has faults. = There is no one who doesn't have faults.
補充:swindler = fraud = conman (名詞)騙子
(v) be cognizant of N. = be conscious of N. 瞭解...
(vi) fraudulent organizations = a ring of swindlers
(vii) utilize N. = make use of N. = take advantage of N. 利用...
例:Utilize each opportunity you can get.
(viii) random (adj.)
I'm positive that she will make a perfect housewife.
(x) profitable = lucrative 有利可圖的

In earlier times, swindlers would inform people to claim prizes and tax refunds, but their methods have gradually developed into schemes of faking the credit card misuses, posing as friends or relatives in need, fake kidnappings, and so on -- now they even switch your phone calls to alleged judicial institutions.
【注意】(i) in earlier times = in former times = in the past 在過去
(ii) inform 人 of 事 = notify 人 of 事 (告知...)
例:No one informed me of the news until just now.
(iii) claim (vt.)
Our company has been poorly funded.
(v) develop into N. = change into N. = turn into N.
Helen has turned into an elegant lady.
注意:在 schemes of 後面有三個受詞,faking、posing、fake kidnappings,排列成「A, B, C, and so on」的串連句型。
(vii) fake (adj.)虛假的 (vt.)假冒
例:This painting is a fake Picasso.
(viii) credit card misuse = fraudulent charges made to credit cards
(ix) pose as N. = pretend to be N. 冒充...
例:The man was caught posing as a police officer.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
(xi) kidnap = kid (小孩) + snap (抓拿) ==> (vt.)

(xiii) allege = al- (使得) + leg (法律) ==> (vt.)

Accordingly, with the rampancy of frauds and increasingly innovated swindling technology, the public find it harder and harder to tell the true from the false, meanwhile losing more and more confidence in people around them.
【注意】(i) accordingly = consequently = therefore = thus = as a result 因此
(ii) with + N. 隨著...
例:With the popularity of cosmetic surgery, people have more choices to improve their looks.
= As cosmetic surgery becomes popular, people have more choices to improve their looks.
(iv) increasingly = more and more 越來越 --> 不要翻「增加地」喔!
例:She is increasingly fat.
(v) innovate = in- (之內) + nov (新) + -ate (使得) ==> (vt.)更新、創新
I found it absurd to believe in that impostor.
(ix) tell A from B = tell A and B apart 區分A和B
例:I cannot tell Helen from her sister. = I cannot tell Helen and her sister apart.

(xi) have confidence in N. = feel confident of N. 對...有信心
例:I'm not confident of the President's innocence.

To make the matters worse, in the face of these conmen's well-armed repertoire of maneuvers, people can do nothing but tolerate -- they even dare not swear at the criminals lest they should receive a truckload of unordered pizza -- can't the government come up with any effective measures against it?
【注意】(i) to make the matters worse = what's worse 更糟的是
(ii) in the face of N. = facing N. = when faced with N. 當面對...

(vi) tolerate = endure = stand = bear = put up with 忍受
(vii) I dare not cry. = I don't dare to cry.
(viii) swear at N. 對...
比較:blame (vt.)責怪、scold (vt.)斥責、curse (vt.)
(ix) lest S. (should) Vr. = for fear that S. (should) Vr.
Remain silent lest he should hear us.
(x) a truckload of N. 一車的... --> load (n.C)載運量
(xi) come up with N. = think up N. = figure out N. 想出...

In practice, the government authorities have by now set up a hot line devoted to avoiding scams for the ease of the police's cracking down on these shameless perpetrators. Yet, above all, people should stay on alert instead of being greedy, so that swindlers won't get the upper hand of them.
