Virtually all superstitions stem from beliefs held in ancient times and fears of natural phenomena. Additionally, it is intriguing that different nations have their own unique superstitious conventions.
【注意】(i) virtually = almost 幾乎 --> virtual (adj.)
The man is a virtual lunatic.
(ii) superstition = super- (在...
(iii) stem from N. = spring from N. = result from N. = grow out of N. 起因於...
(iv) beliefs held = beliefs which were held
I harbor a belief that I'll succeed.
(v) in ancient times = in former times = in earlier times 古時候
(vi) 「有趣的是」要用 It is interesting that 這種句型去翻譯。
(vii) intrigue = in- (在...
(viii) unique = uni (一) + -ique (法文形容詞字尾) ==> (adj.)
同字根單字:union、unite、unit、universe、uniform、unisex...等。
(ix) convention = custom = tradition 習俗

No other people can beat the Chinese in the number of superstitions. For example, feng-shui, fortune-telling, worship, weddings, funerals, and so on, have become extremely intricate branches of learning.
No other teacher is more handsome than Don.
(ii) beat A in B 在B方面勝過A
例:No other thing can beat a cup of coffee in refreshing a person.
(iii) 由於「例如」之後還有一個長句子,因此不用 like 或 such as,而用 for example。
Ancestor worship is unique to the Chinese.
(vi) learning 是不可數名詞,要用 branch (分支、門) 來使用複數:a branch of learning 一門學問。

Of course, superstitions about taboos are not in the least peculiar to Oriental countries. Such rational people as Americans and Europeans -- advanced as their technologies are -- still entertain ineffable biases toward numerous things, such as the figure 13, Friday, and so forth.
【注意】(i) superstitions about taboos 有關忌諱的迷信
補充:a taboo word 禁忌詞、It is under taboo.
(ii) not in the least = not at all 一點也不
(iii) be peculiar to N. = be unique to N. 為...
This style of cooking is peculiar to the Japanese.
(iv) such A as B 如同B這樣的A
例:Discussing such taboo subjects is not suitable for such a graceful lady as you.
(v) adj. / 分詞 + as + S. V. ....
例:Poor as I am, I work hard.
(vii) ineffable = unspeakable = undescribable 無可言喻的
(viii) have a bias toward N. 對...
例:I have a bias toward classical music.

In fact, many truths initially originate in superstitions, just as the formation of religions, establishment of customs, and transmission of cultures are inextricably related to superstitions.
【注意】(i) initially = originally = in the beginning = at first 起初、一開始
(ii) A originate in B = A take / find its origin in B (A起源於B)
例:This tradition takes its origin in Middle East.
(iii) just as 後面要接完整子句,而 just like 後面要接名詞。
例:Don't you wish your girlfriend were smart just like me?
(v) be related to N. = be concerned / associated / connected with N. 與...相關
例:Surveys indicate that smoking is associated with habits.
(vi) inextricable = in- (不) + ex- (向外) + tric (複雜) + -able (能夠的) ==> (adj.)

On top of that, it is worthwhile to study superstitious traditions in every culture, whether we believe in them or not -- after all, in the face of uncertain future, it is not bad to have a mental safeguard against ill luck.
【注意】(i) on top of that = besides = additionally = moreover 此外
(ii) It is worthwhile + to Vr.
It is worthwhile studying waterbirds.
Whether you like it or not, I'll buy it.
No matter where you go, I'll follow you.
I don't believe you.
例:I believe in you.
(v) after all = in the final analysis
(vi) have a safeguard against N. 對於...
Do you have any safeguard against accidents?
