Prey (PS3553.C86-1 2003)

Book Description

The new novel from the bestselling author of Jurassic Park. A terrifying page-turner in classic Crichton tradition, masterfully combining the elements of a heart-pounding thriller with cutting-edge technology. Deep in the Nevada desert, the Xymos Corporation has built a state-of-the-art fabrication plant, surrounded by nothing but cactus and coyotes for miles and miles. Inside, eight people are trapped -- because outside, waiting for them, looking for them, is a predatory swarm of micro-particles that they themselves created. The swarm is getting bigger and more powerful by the hour, and they must find a way to stop it before it gets inside -- unless it's already too late...Once again, Michael Crichton combines up-to-the-minute science with relentless pacing to create an electrifying techno-thriller.

The scarlet letter (PS1868.H31 2009)

Have you ever tried to read The Scarlet Letter but realized midway through the second sentence that you were already lost? No Fear: The Scarlet Letter will change all that. No need to worry about losing the thread anymore: whenever Hawthorne’s sentences become too convoluted to follow, or you can’t figure out exactly what he’s talking about, simply look across at the right-hand page and a simplified, modernized text—using the kind of English we actually speak today—will set you back on track. Soon you’ll be reading Hawthorne’s own words fearlessly—and actually enjoying it.

Gecko tails: a journey through Cambodia (DS554.L76 2000)

From Library Journal

In 1991, the Paris Peace Agreements ended military conflict and mandated democratic elections in Cambodia. The author, an aspiring journalist, arrived when the country was provisionally governed by the United Nations Temporary Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), which monitored the 1993 elections. Her intention is to chronicle the impact of foreigners (the UN mission, aid workers, journalists, photographers, etc.) before and after the election. Livingston's social locus is the Gecko, a bar named after a small lizard. Her recorded conversations with feckless UNTAC workers and self-serving freelancers pursuing feature and photo opportunities are uninstructive and ineffectual to her purpose. Furthermore, when she makes day or overnight excursions from Phnom Penh to the Cambodian countryside (qualifying as "a journey through Cambodia"), she extrapolates little significant political or cultural insight. Sense and sensibility (PR4034.Au7K62 2004)

One of Jane Austen's most beloved novels, brought to life in a sparkling dramatization!

When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships are sorely tried. But this is a romance, and through the hardships and heartbreak, true love and a happy ending will find their way for both the sister who is all sense and the one who is all sensibility.

The Dashwood sisters are very different from each other in appearance and temperament; Elinor's good sense and readiness to observe social forms contrast with Marianne's impulsive candor and warm but excessive sensibility. Both struggle to maintain their integrity and find happiness in the face of a competitive marriage market.

The Canterbury tales (PR1870.C39W93 1998)

From Barnes & Noble

Over the years, octogenarian translator Burton Raffel has tackled and conquered many of the most forbidding challenges in world literature: Beowulf, Gargantua and Pantagruel, Don Quixote, the Nibelungenleid. This book finds him grappling quite gracefully with another behemoth, Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century classic The Canterbury Tales. For modern readers, the robustness and subtlety of this collection is often diluted by the vagaries of language evolution. With a respectful poetic hand, Raffel retouches Chaucer's minutely realized word portraits, recovering their sheen. A Modern Library translation destined to be both popular and critical acclaimed.

Do not lose heart (BV4905.2.D79D79 1998)

Devotional thoughts for those who are suffering--never minimizing pain, but always maximizing hope.

There is no way to escape suffering. Sooner or later each one of us faces terrible loss or disappointment, whether the circumstance is divorce, the death of a loved one, the loss of a career, or a terminal illness. At such times, inspiring stories with happily-ever-after endings may not meet the need.

Do Not Lose Heart is a collection of meditations for those who need to hear the truth about life in a fallen world and about how to get through suffering intact. Based on 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Do Not Lose Heart affirms the deep peace that comes from trusting in a wise and loving God.

Told in the parable format of The One Minute Manager(r) and Raving Fans, Leadership by the Book draws on the model and messages of Jesus as the source of practical lessons in effective leadership. Recounting the story of a teacher, a minister, and a marketplace leader who support one another in their leadership challenges, this extraordinary book offers unexpected and exceptional answers to tough leadership issues such as: How do I best serve our customers by serving our people? How can I unify my personal beliefs and my role as a leader in a way that feels good "deep down" and still produces desired results? How can I attain the triple bottom line effect of Raving Fan customers, Gung-Ho employees, and financial well-being by leading with integrity? The authors offer simple strategies for bringing vision--and values--to the workplace by examining messages and examples from the Bible. Sure to be required reading for all leaders, managers, and their key people, Leadership by the Book also provides lessons for the day-to-day life of parents, coaches, entrepreneurs, and religious and community leaders everywhere.

Picture bride (PS3571.Uc4)

Carrying a photograph of the man she is to marry but has yet to meet, young Hana Omiya arrives in San Francisco, California, in 1917, one of several hundred Japanese "picture brides" whose arranged marriages brought them to America in the early 1900s.

Her story is intertwined with others: her husband Taro Takeda, an Oakland shopkeeper; Kiku and her husband Henry, who reject demeaning city work to become farmers; Dr. Kaneda, a respected community leader who is destroyed by the adopted land he loves. All are caught up in the cruel turmoil of World War II, when West Coast Japanese Americans are uprooted from their homes and imprisoned in desert concentration camps. Although tragedy strikes each of them, the same spirit and strength that brought her to America enable Hana to survive.

The tempest (PR2833.G35 1995)

This joyous play, the last comedy of Shakespeare's career, sums up his stagecraft with a display of seemingly effortless skill. Prospero, exiled Duke of Milan, living on an enchanted island, has the opportunity to punish and forgive his enemies when he raises a tempest that drives them ashore—as well as to forestall a rebellion, to arrange the meeting of his daughter, Miranda, with an eminently suitable young prince, and, more important, to relinquish his magic powers in recognition of his advancing age. Richly filled with music and magic, romance and comedy, the play's theme of love and reconciliation offers a splendid feast for the senses and the heart.
