    Major in Taxonomy of lady ferns, genus Athyrium, in Taiwan

  • Athyrium silvicola Tagawa, Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 2. 17. 1933.

    Athyrium nigripes (Bl.) T. Moore, Index Fil. 49. 1857;Aspidium nigripes Blume, Enum. Pl. Javae 2: 162. 1828;

    Hair (trichome) types is a very important character for identification. Here I show two types of hair under SEM observation.

    Spines on adaxial side of lamina are important characters for identification. There are three types in genus Athyrium.

    Athyrium iseanum Rosens in Fedde, Repert. Sp. Nov. 13. 124. 1913.

    Athyrium cryptogrammoides Hayata

    Rhizome stout, ascending, covered with persistent stipe bases, scales thin, entire, pale brown to brown, ovate. Stipes 10-18 cm long, stramineous, scaly at base, sparsely scaly upwards; lamina finely dissected, to 25 cm long, by 12 cm wide, lanceolate, trupinnate; rachis stramineous; rachillae narrowly winged; pinnae ascending, with vert short petioles, linear-lanceolate, attenuate; pinnules usually anadromous, cut to costa, lobes ending in sharp teeth; upper surface with long spine-like processes along costules. Sori often covering the entire undersurface when mature and protruding past the narrow lobes of the pinnules; indusia oblong.

    Athyrium arisanense (Hay.) Tagawa, Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 2(3). 195. 1933.

    Diplazium arisanense Hayata in Icon. Pl. Formosan. 4: 212-213, f. 144. 1914.

    地生; 根莖直立, 偶倒臥; 葉柄長5-40公分, 綠色, 草桿色或紫紅色; 葉柄基部鱗片深褐色或黑色, 邊緣全緣, 具或不具黃色窄邊; 二回羽狀深裂; 一回羽葉長7-25公分, 寬3-10公分, 末端具漸尖至長尾尖; 葉軸及羽軸遠軸面均具短, 單細胞腺毛, 以及多細胞長軟毛和末端膨大腺毛; 最下方一至三對一回羽葉基部小羽片具極短或不具柄, 近對生; 其他部位小羽片基部收縮, 不具柄; 二回小羽片末端圓鈍或尖頭, 長0.5-5公分, 羽軸兩側羽片長度相近, 僅最下方羽片的下方小羽片延長成鐮刀狀,或與上方小羽片相同, 邊緣具斜展的鋸齒; 孢子囊群短直, 以及少數彎勾狀或背生於小脈兩側, 孢膜與孢子囊群同型, 邊緣全緣或具波浪緣; 孢子囊群位於小脈中段, 不緊靠羽軸及小羽軸, 每一小羽片一至多對, 長度1-3公釐; 孢子黃褐色, 長橢圓形, 表面具可剝落的扁平皺紋.

    Terrestrial; rhizome errect, sometimes ascending; Stipe length 5-40 cm, green, stramineous or purple; scales on stipe base dark brown or black, concolor, entire in edge; fronds bipinnatifid, pinnae 7-25 by 3-10 cm, end of pinnae caudate or acute; rachis and costae pubescent at abaxil surface, cover densely short unicellular hairs and some long-soft hairs and gland hairs; lowest pinnae sessile or with less 1 mm petiole; pinnulate opposite or near opposite, length 0.5-5 cm, acroscopic and basiscopic pinnae equal length, excepted some lowest pinnae with basiscopic enlongate pinnulate; serrate in edge; sori short linear or hook crossing over the veinlet, sometimes two sides in veinlet (Diplazium type), indusia shape as sori, edge entire or crisped; sori position at middle veinlet, not attach to the costae and costulate, 1 to 5 pairs in one pinnulate, length 1-3 mm; spore yellow brown, ellipsoidal, surface cover flat dropped perispore.

    Holotype: Taiwan: Jan. 1912, B. Hayata & S. Sasaki s.n. (HT: ?)

    South China, Taiwan, and Japan.

     This species is much similar with Athyrium kuratae Serizawa and Athyrium kenzosatakei Kurata. It also similar with Athyrium hainanense Ching but the later one without spine on adaxil costae.

    Athyrium erythropodum Hayata, Icon. Pl. Form. 4. 233. 1914. f. 163.

    Rhizome stout, erect; scales pale brown, lanceolate. Stipes tufted, stramineous, 8-15 cm long, scaly at base; lamina ovate-lanceolate, tripinnatifid, 25-35 cm long, 10-15 cm wide; pinnae ascending, lanceolate-falcate, 10-15 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, petioles short; basal pinnae opposite or subopposite, medial pairs alternate; adaxial pinnules longer than abaxial; with spines on upper surface of rachis. Sori linear to round; indusia linear, curved or more often reniform, erose.

    The Flora of Taiwan mentioned this species also occuring in S. Japan, but the Flora of Japan did not mention this species. The characters mentioned by Flora of Taiwan are wrong and be corrected here.

    Distribution: Taiwan endemic.

    Type: Taiwan, Mt. Arisan. Ito, S. n. Apr. 1914.
