The four characters of “Ben Lai Mian Mu”(the original appearance) on the inscribed tablet, highly hung on the entrance of the main hall of Dharma Drum Mountain World Center for Buddhist Education (DDMWCBBE), reveal a great meaning. Do you know what they exactly stand for?
Whenever I have free time, I go to a temple alone or with friends of mine to expose to the peaceful ambiance in and surrounding it, which, more often than not, drifts away my worries as well as clears and calms my mind.
DDMWCBBE is one of the Buddhist holy sites in Taiwan I sometimes pay a visit to at leisure. Founded by Dharma Master Sheng Yen, Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) is making every effort to promote Zen and Buddhism practices and charitable work in Taiwan and even around the world. All activities from DDM are good for body and mind, which not only teach us the proper practices of Zen and Buddhism, but further guide us how to play a good role in being a “Human”.
DDMWCBBE is located in Jin Shan, Taipei , with scenic landscape in its surroundings, tranquil and serene. Overlooking from the top level of the center, where the main hall is situated, you will feel totally relaxed and lost as if you were part of the nature due to the stunning scenery. This explains why DDM chose this site as its headquarter because the magnificent and dignified appearance of DDM has thus been shown off with the great beauty around.
** 第一句..., with scenic landscape... That woman wore a nice dress, with beautiful diamond earrings adding to her elegance.
Three Buddha statues are enshrined in the main hall. On the entrance of the hall shows four big characters-Ben Lai Mian Mu. With curiosity, you might ask why DDMWCBBE adopted these four characters here instead of using the common words like Da Shung Bao Dian or other familiar phrases usually inscribed on the main hall tablets of other temples. What do Ben Lai Mian Mu (the original appearance in its literal meaning) exactly mean?
Well, in reality, the Buddha statues in the main hall are not exactly viewed as the Buddha widely worshiped, but can also be regarded as the nature of all beings. Sakyamuni Buddha once said, everyone has the true nature and wisdom as those of a Buddha, and they are only misted layer by layer by the worries piled up from transmigration to transmigration. This supports the saying that the Buddha in the main hall can also be seen as our true nature, the nature peaceful and wise as that of a Buddha. Our true nature may not be easily regained in the current life, but as long as we have realized the truth and begin walking on the proper path, we can be rooted with the Virtuous Seed leading us to trace back the origin of ourselves in our future lives.
它們就是to view…as…(…be viewed as…)、to regard…as…(…be regarded as…)、to see…as…(…be seen as…)。如：Cindy is viewed as/regarded as/seen as the most beautiful student in her class = Cindy’s class view/ regard/see her as the most beautiful student.
A few years ago, I went to the Thousand-hand Liuli Boddhisattva Exhibition held by Loretta Hui San Yang’s Liuligongfan. Among all the artwork, a statue of Liuli Boddhisattva with her legs leisurely crossed, her mouth slightly smiling especially caught my eyes. Beside the statue, a sentence was inscribed and it went, “if you have a chance to stand on the very top of the universe, you may try to retrospect your past and you will find out that your current life is just as small as one of the hundred-thousand bubbles in the Liuli Boddhisattva.
This sentence is so philosophic and leaves a lot for us to ponder. It tells us the fact that no matter how much we cling to the fame and gain we have now, we will eventually say good-bye to them because after this life, there comes another one. So, the difficulties we face in this life are nothing. No one knows in which of the Six Realms (God, Asura, Human, Hell, Animal, Hungry Ghost) he/she will be reborn, but what we behave in this life predicts where we go next. Therefore, there’s nothing to be argued or clung to. All our worries, sufferings, and joys are just like a dream, and everyone will be awaken from this dream. After experiencing numerous transmigrations, don’t you feel that you are tired and it’s time to stop to take a break? If we could try to realize the truth of a life, to well manage our current lives by means of passion and wisdom, and to treat all the worries we , sufferings, and joy we encounter as tools to better us, we may now be paving a road of Bodhi for ourselves towards Nirvana in the future.
** 第一句…so..that… John is so tall that he can touch the ceiling.
