Ray's notes on basics of dancing salsa

A. Music
- To find the beat "1" or "5", try to find the conga (?) sound "pa-pa", which is always on 4 or 8. This is also the sound for "cha-cha" in Cha-cha.
- Clave (normal) is on 2, 3, 5, 6-1/2, 8.
B. Individual body motion
- Feet: Slightly turned out but never in. Keep them close and the steps small. Concentrate more on controlled body-center movement than feet movement.
- Body: 膝蓋微屈,沉肩墜肘,正脊鬆腰;重心控制在腰腹,步伐移動若滑行。With these, the body motion should be smooth and steady; it can sometimes feel like gliding, but never hopping.
- Steps patterns: For the guy, it starts with left-right-left on 1-2-3 and feels like quick-quick-slow (or quick-quick-quick on 1-2-3 plus tap/stop on 4 with the left foot), and then right-left-right on 5-6-7. For the lady, it's the opposite.
* Break on 2: two steps (1-2) in the same direction before stepping into original position on 3. Guys start stepping back with left on 1.
- Turns: Step on the beats to avoid rush. Do the full step forward on 5 before the lady turns on 6. Concentrate on your pelvis if there is trouble of unbalance; do not focus on your raised elbows (undesired anyway).
C. Partner dancing
- Resistance: Keep the right amount of (constant) opposite energy, and thus the frame firm while still bouncy. (鬆而不軟,緊而不僵﹞
- Body leads body (for the guy)! And let the guy leads your body not just your arm(s) for the lady (arms don't move away from body)!
- Followers only react! Always find the most comfortable body position within the frame set by the leader, and be prepared for the next move in all directions.
- Both work on keeping the follower moving on a straight line.
- Both work towards staying close to each other.
- Turns: Shoulders down, elbows in; get into this frame and keep it through the turn, which should be done on your own pelvis without pulling the partner's hands. (And these are the tricks for you to keep on the straight line and stay close to the partner.)
Conclusion: With proper body posture and the right amount of resistance, we try to manage 引而不發,好整以暇,以至遊刃有餘。Music is actually between the notes (of 1-2-3-4). Enjoy the process in details!
