Daisuke Matsuzaka extends himself
By Michael Silverman Tuesday, July 8, 2008
Daisuke Matsuzaka’s record remained at 9-1, but he scored a huge win last night by pitching into the eighth inning of the Red Sox’ 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Going deep into games has not been a trademark of Matsuzaka’s second season in the big leagues. Throwing too many pitches, allowing too many walks but then not allowing baserunners to score has resulted in statistics so hot (2.84 ERA) and cold that he could not earn a berth on the American League All-Star team.
Last night, he pitched very well and efficiently, which is all the Sox are asking him to do.
“(Pitching coach) John (Farrell) and I were talking about that before the game, and I said, ‘Boy, I’d like Dice-K to get comfortable and let him go out there and pitch because it would be really good for him,’ ” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “And he did that. Got deep enough where we’re not trying to get a lot of innings from the bullpen in a 1-0 game.”
Command of his fastball allowed Matsuzaka to control the Twins lineup. He did load the bases in the first inning with a pair of two-out walks around a single but he pitched out of that jam.
“Today, overall, my fastball was good, so I think (catcher Jason Varitek) had an easier time calling the game,” Matsuzaka said. “I also think I was able to attack the batters very well. I always want to minimize wasted pitches out there. That’s something I’m trying to work on.”
Added Varitek: “That was the best stuff he’s had all year.”
Matsuzaka had pitched only 11 total innings in his three prior starts, his first since coming off the disabled list with a rotator cuff strain. Whether or not he passed a hurdle in his confidence, his stuff or both remains to be seen, but he stressed the importance of not getting a visit from Francona too early in the game.
“Of all our starting pitchers, I’ve been the only one who hasn’t been able to go deep in a game, so what I’ve been trying to do is go deeper and help out our bullpen,” said Matsuzaka, who was a little disappointed he was lifted after allowing a pair of one-out singles in the eighth inning.
“He threw a lot of strikes, again three walks. He had good finish on his pitches, he challenged a lot of hitters with his fastball, he had some depth to his slider, he threw a cutter,” Francona said. “I thought he threw with a lot of confidence, looked like he was feeling pretty good about himself. At some point, the game dictated that you go to the bullpen.”
The Red Sox went to the bullpen late last night. For Matsuzaka, it was a new and improved accomplishment.
