2009-11-18 11:06 2009 Wine Spectator's Top 100(全揭曉)

(Left)Columbia Crest winemaker Ray Einberger

Columbia Crest
Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley Reserve 2005
95 points / $27
5,000 cases made
Washington
Columbia Crest, founded in 1978, is part of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, which accounts for more than half the wine produced in Washington. The winery's ability to combine quality and value has earned it 14 spots in our Top 100. But it has reached new heights this year.
The Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has an enviable track record: four out of its seven most recent vintages scored 92 points or higher. With an excellent growing season in 2005, winemaker Ray Einberger, who worked at Château Mouton-Rothschild and Napa's Opus One, crafted an exceptional wine. He used grapes from six low-yielding vineyards to create a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 5 percent Merlot and 4 percent Cabernet Franc. This wine belongs in the company of the world's great Cabernets and, with its low price and significant production, earns our 2009 Wine of the Year.

Brothers Miguel Angel and Marcos Eguren
Numanthia-Termes
Toro Termes 2005
96 points / $27
4,000 cases imported
Spain
This bodega helped transform the red wines of Spain's Toro region from rustic to opulent, with its focus on low-yielding, old-vine Tinto de Toro (the local variation of Tempranillo) and aging in new French oak barrels. Founded in 1998 by the Eguren family of Rioja, Numanthia-Termes was sold in 2008 to luxury giant Moët-Hennessy Louis Vuitton LVMH. The lowest-priced, largest-production of the bodega's three cuvées, Termes has earned outstanding scores in every vintage made except 2003. Reflecting the ripe vintage, the 2005 is a powerful yet balanced red.

Brothers Daniel and Frédéric Brunier
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 2007
95 points / $70
17,000 cases made
France
When Châteauneuf-du-Pape became France's first Appellation d'Origine Côntrollée (AOC), in 1936, Vieux Télégraphe had already been in operation for nearly 40 years. Today, brothers Daniel and Frédéric Brunier farm the domaine's 173 acres of vineyards located in the appellation's famed La Crau sector. This red wine is a blend of 65 percent Grenache with 15 percent each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, plus a dash of Cinsault, Clairette and other varieties, all sourced from vines averaging 60 years of age.

Dan Kosta and Michael Browne
Kosta Browne Pinot Noir
Sonoma Coast 2007
95 points / $52
3,069 cases made
California
Few
people have made as big an impact on the California wine scene in so
short a time as Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. Founded in 1997, Kosta
Browne has gone from strength to strength, releasing its best Pinot
Noirs in the past four vintages. Kosta Browne made 11,000 cases of 2007
Pinot, split among nine bottlings, most of them single-vineyard wines.
The Sonoma Coast (one of two broader, appellation bottlings) is sourced
from four vineyards, including Kanzler and Gap's Crown. Chris Costello
is managing director.

Francesco Ricasoli
Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico
Castello di Brolio 2006
96 points / $54
6,170 cases made
Italy
The Ricasoli family has been making wine in Chianti Classico for centuries. In 1872, Baron Bettino Ricasoli penned the original formula for the delicate reds of this Tuscan appellation. Today, Francesco Ricasoli continues the tradition of quality winemaking, crafting some of the region's most structured and beautiful wines. Castello di Brolio is made from Sangiovese with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and two-thirds of it was aged for 18 months in new barriques (a type of small oak barrel).

Molly and Donn Chappellet
Chappellet
Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Signature 2006
94 points / $42
7,650 cases made
California
Pritchard Hill, in the foothills east of St. Helena, has become a hot spot for Cabernet in the past decade, but Donn and Molly Chappellet recognized its potential as early as 1967. Signature is their flagship wine, culled from estate vineyards planted on shallow volcanic soils 1,000 feet or more above the Napa Valley floor. The 2006 is 76 percent Cabernet Sauvignon; winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus added 18 percent Merlot plus dashes of Malbec and Petit Verdot.

Pietro Ratti
Renato Ratti
Barolo Marcenasco 2005
96 points / $44
5,000 cases made
Italy
This
Piedmont red comes from the Ratti family's hillside vineyards known as
Marcenasco, below the village of La Morra. The 25-year-old vines are
planted on steep slopes facing west, providing the Nebbiolo maximum
exposure for optimum ripening. The Rattis recently completed
construction of an ultramodern winery, which has enabled them to
fine-tune the winemaking. After fermentation, the wine is aged in a mix
of Slovenian oak casks and smaller, neutral oak barrels.

Giovanni Manetti
Fontodi
Colli della Toscana
Centrale Flaccianello 2006
99 points / $110
5,000 cases made
Italy
The 2006 Flaccianello earned the honor of being the highest-rated wine in this year's tasting report on Tuscany. It's a pure Sangiovese produced from vines more than 30 years old, grown in the hillside vineyard of Flaccianello, near the town of Panzano in the Chianti Classico region. The Manetti family has owned this historic estate since 1968. The 2006 was aged in Allier oak barrels for 18 months, then spent an additional year in bottle before release.

Merry Edwards
Merry Edwards
Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley 2007
96 points / $29
3,880 cases made
California
Merry Edwards, whose eponymous label also produces Pinot Noir in Sonoma, shows her magic here with Sauvignon Blanc: This wine earns the highest rating to date for the varietal in the Golden State. Edwards, who prefers the aromatic Sauvignon Blanc Musqué clone, barrel-ferments the wine and performs bâtonnage (stirring on the lees) while it ages in barrel, which she says adds body and showcases riper flavors.

Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer
Brancaia
Toscana Tre 2007
93 points / $20
25,000 cases made
Italy
Brancaia consists of two properties in Tuscany—the Widmer family's original two vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico, and their younger estate on the coast, Brancaia in Maremma. Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer, daughter of the Swiss founders, oversees production with assistance from top Tuscan enologist Carlo Ferrini. Tre, the label's third wine, is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from all three Brancaia vineyards. The 2007 represents the wine's highest score to date.
