    認知心理學(BF311.As3Ch42 2004)

Chicken soup for the teenage soul on tough stuff: stories of tough times and lessons learned (BJ1661.C16H19 2001)

    Synopsis

This latest offering in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul
series explores a host of challenges faced by today's teens. Within its
pages teens will find portraits of life's complexities expressed from the
viewpoint of their peers. Teen contributors share their thoughts and feelings on
difficult issues, ranging from poor self-image to thoughts of suicide, from
family discord to coping with the loss, from peer pressure to school violence.

Teens ranked stress as one of their top concerns (along with child abuse and
STDs). Oftentimes, the pressure can feel overwhelming, whether they involve
worrying about an upcoming test, competition sports, family responsibilities,
dating, or more extreme issues such as depression, suicide and school violence.

The first three volumes of the Teenage Soul series and the companion
journal illustrate the ongoing popularity of this series (unit sales exceed 11
million). Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff and the Spring
2001 release Teenage Soul Letters will undoubtedly follow suit as the
next best-sellers in a phenomenally popular series.

Mama Provi and the pot of rice (PZ7.R71R74 1997)

    Synopsis

Mama Provi and her granddaughter Lucy live in the same tall apartment building -- Mama Provi on the first floor, Lucy on the eighth. When Lucy has the chicken pox and can't come down to visit, Mama Provi decides to make a trip upstairs with a big pot of her tasty arroz con pollo. But on her way up the seven flights of stairs, she meets a neighbor on every floor. En un dos por tres (in Spanish this means "lickedy-split"), the chicken and rice are joined by Mrs. Landers's crusty white bread, Senor Rivera's frijoles negros, Mrs. Woo's tea, and more...and Mama Provi arrives at Lucy's door with a tremendous feast!

    Annotation

Mama Provi takes chicken and rice to her sick granddaughter Lucy who lives upstairs.

    Publishers Weekly

In her picture book debut, Rosa-Casanova presents a tale of ethnic culinary delights. Mama Provi and her young granddaughter Lucy live in the same apartment building. When Lucy falls ill with the chicken pox, Mama Provi plans to carry a pot of her special arroz con pollo up the eight flights of stairs to her ailing granddaughter. As she stops on each floor, however, Mama Provi smells other wonderful foods and soon is trading her rice for bread, frijoles negros, apple pie, etc. By the time she reaches Lucy's apartment, Mama Provi's bags are laden with a multicultural feast. Rosa-Casanova sprinkles her text with Spanish phrases and presents an accurate portrait of an urban building, although she skates a little close to ethnic stereotyping (an African American woman contributes collard greens; an Asian woman offers tea). The author's upbeat writing style and Mama Provi's energetic personality, however, prevent the story from slipping into patness. Roth (Pearl Moscowitz's Last Stand) strikes an intriguing balance between pale washes and vibrant colors and, in his signature style, he spatters his scenes with flecks of paint that seemingly shower from his subjects, dressed here in spiritedly mismatched prints. He depicts Mama Provi from a variety of uncommon perspectives as she wends her way up staircases and through narrow hallways. Friendly faces and the warm exchanges between characters take center stage in each spread, creating a truly neighborly mood. Ages 5-8. (May)

    Chutneys and relishes (TX819.B63 1995)

    Annotation

No canning or preserving is required to prepare any of these delicious condiments, including Savory Apple-Onion Chutney with roast chicken, Honeydew-Starfruit Relish with fish, and Spiced Pear Chutney with Pecans. Chutneys and relishes also make great appetizers and taste wonderful on sandwiches. 75 2-color paintings; 50 drawings. Index.

    Library Journal

Each of these titles contains easy recipes for dressing up a meal. Ranging from an unusual Tangy Cantaloupe Relish to Hot Mustard Fruits to Golden Carrot Chutney, the collection of chutneys and relishes (all low-fat or nonfat) is more interesting than the sauce book. Some of the savory sauces are low-fat or low-cal, some are not; being realistic, Bodger has opted for indulgent dessert sauces. Her recipes are fine, but the selection is heavy on pasta sauces and seems less imaginative than the other book. Nevertheless, Chutneys and Relishes is definitely recommended, and you might as well get the set.

    The enormous crocodile (PZ7.D13B58 19930

    Synopsis

The Enormous Crocodile is incredibly hungry-and incredibly greedy. His favorite meal is a plump, juicy little child, and he intends to gobble up as many of them as he can! But when the other animals in the jungle join together to put an end to his nasty schemes, the Enormous Crocodile learns a lesson he won't soon forget. Dahl's wicked humor is as delightful as ever in this new, larger edition of a hilarious favorite.

    Illustrated by Quentin Blake.

    Annotation

The enormous crocodile devises secret plans and a few clever tricks to secure his lunch only to have them foiled by his neighbors.

    Suzanne Lieurance - Children's Literature

This is the story of Enormous Crocodile who is incredibly hungry and incredibly greedy. He tells his friend Notsobig Crocodile, "For my lunch today I would like a nice juicy little child." Then he goes about using "secret plans and clever tricks" to find a child to eat. But the Notsobig One tells him, "You've never done anything clever in your life! You're the stupidest croc on the whole river!" which lets young listeners know right away that this is going to be a silly story, with just enough scariness to make it fun. The Enormous Crocodile encounters other animals in the jungle that, one by one, foil his plans to find a yummy child and eventually teach him a lesson he won't soon forget. Quentin Blake's clever illustrations are a perfect match for Dahl's lyrical text as Enormous Crocodile tries to get close to a child by posing as a coconut tree, a seesaw, and an animal ride on the merry-go-round, among other not-so-clever disguises. 2003 (orig. 1978), Puffin Books,

    BookList

Delffs offers another book in the long line of self-help material currently on the market. Using ongoing anecdotes about troubled individuals, Delffs invites comparisons, analyzes the problem, and suggests that each individual is longing for God and so needs to find the courage to repent for past behavior. At the end of each chapter, readers are encouraged to reflect on the stories and write down their feelings in a journal. To aid in the process, Delffs includes entries from his own journal. For those who are seeking a solution to some of the problems of everyday life, this book offers a valid solution. Although the approach is somewhat pious, Delffs' faith is obvious and his intentions are sound. The book would be more effective, however, if each one of his hypothetical anecdotes did not overtly or covertly point to women as the primary source of problems.
