Worksong: written by Gary Paulsen (PZ8.3.P28P28 1997)
Synopsis
This talented pair celebrates the work ethic with sensitivity and grace—and reminds us of the quiet dignity that exists in everyday lives. People at work, doing things that are so essential to us all, are lyrically depicted in Gary Paulsen's spare and elegant verse and in Ruth Wright Paulsen's richly textured oil paintings.
Annotation
Illustrations and rhyming text depict people doing all kinds of work.
Publishers Weekly
From truck driver to cafeteria cook, from nurse to deep-sea diver-"All the things there are to be" gather together in this gentle rhyming hymn to the dignity of work. Here, work is the common tie that binds, rather than the distinction that sets individuals apart. In both words and pictures, the efforts of people who spend themselves in everyday work muster a communal force-whether it is a group of office workers at their "glowing screens," the truck-farming duo of father and daughter arranging their produce, or the solitary roofer. Gary Paulsen's couplets sometimes strike a whimsical note ("ice cream cones to lick and wear"), but more often touch the heart ("gentle arms that lift and hold,/ and all the soldiers brave and bold"). Ruth Wright Paulsen's textured, slightly muted oil paintings enrich the text and set off an emotional reverberation. Throughout, the subtlety of gestures (rather than facial expressions) and of concrete words (rather than feelings) keeps sentimentality at bay

Sea change: alone across the Atlantic in a wooden boat (G470.N51 1997)
Synopsis
Peter Nichols and his wife bought and restored an old wooden sailboat, Toad, and lived aboard it for five years, sailing through the Caribbean and across the Atlantic to Europe, where their marriage broke up. Sea Change is the story of Nichols's return to the sea alone. In the middle of the ocean, the twenty-seven-foot engineless Toad springs a leak, and Nichols struggles to keep his boat afloat. As he tests the limits of his courage and the depths of his fear, he discovers more than he knew about his marriage, his boat, and himself. Nichols shares his love of the sea, the literature of the small-boat sailors who have gone before him, and his own unsuspected strength and grace when faced with catastrophe.
Publishers Weekly
"The leak and I are in a race to dry land," Nichols writes one month into his single-handed voyage from England to Maine in a 27-foot, wooden sailboat. Lovingly restored over five years with his wife, J., Toad represents to him both a home created and a love that failed. As the leak increases mid-ocean and the reality of the miles left to travel in an increasingly unsafe craft grows clearer, Nichols recalls his years with J. and who he was before them. The two had lived aboard Toad in the Virgin Islands, chartering to tourists when they needed money, and Nichols recalls the sighs of envy at what to others appeared an idyllic existence. But their companionship was far from idyllic, something that hits him full-force when in the middle of the Atlantic, Nichols finds J.'s diaries. Despite rising waters belowdecks, Nichols, buoyed by faith in his little ship and in his ability to navigate, refuses to believe that he will not make shore. Until knee-deep in water, he hesitates to radio a Mayday. With the massive container ship that will rescue him approaching, "the size and appearance of a mall nearing the end of construction," the reader wants to scoop Toad out of the vast, impersonal sea, so clearly has Nichols portrayed his home as a living thing. The ultimate reward of a challenge, Nichols learns, need not be what one originally aimed for. Must we cast ourselves offshore to discover ourselves? The metaphorical message here is, yes. "This approach made a real difference when we needed to move fast."--Donald Petersen, retired CEO, Ford Motor Company.
Publishers Weekly
Business consultant Jacobs promotes here a strategy that involves both managers and employees in planning and incorporating change throughout companies on a regular basis. He stresses that ``real time strategic change,'' which ``involves an entire organization in fundamental, far-reaching and fast-paced change,'' unleashes ``extraordinary energy and optimism'' among employees by focusing their attention on mastering change and achieving business goals, a process Jacobs contends rarely happens in American companies. He argues that democratic procedures allow employees to develop loyalty to organizations ``they want to call their own.'' Jacobs's organizational theories make good sense. Illustrated. In the cities and jungles of Brazil (F2517.R14 1995)
Synopsis
Drawing on stays made over a half-dozen years, Paul Rambali - a natural storyteller with a sharp eye for contradiction - dissolves the sugarcoating common to travel writing on Brazil. Carnaval and Copacabana take a backseat as Rambali propels us on a wild-side walk through this enigmatic nation on the brink. Tracing back the abundant miseries of the Brazilians, Rambali goes from Third World megalopolis to virgin rain forest, where he is confronted with hard and perhaps irreconcilable truths about our drive to build cities, and our romance with the jungle. Here is a country where gunmen are hired to get rid of the orphans who live homeless at the feet of luxury high-rises; where an illiterate population gets its news from TV soaps; where animist religion - Macumba - pervades everything, but an evangelical church, waging "holy war" against it, collects millions from destitute true believers, where gangsters provide shantytowns with everything from electricity to law and order. Here is the last frontier of the New World, where greed, ambition, and folly are the circumstances of daily life. In prose that is vivid, impressionistic, and occasionally novelistic, Paul Rambali captures Brazil's vitality even as he reveals its manifold paradoxes and absurdities. The result is an unsettling account of paradise lost, by a writer whose genuine affection for his subject never clouds the sharp truth of his vision.
Publishers Weekly
In Rio, we're told here, a hired gun will kill a child for $70; the price for an adult is $250. Between 1984 and 1989, nearly 1400 minors met violent deaths, most of them 14 to 18 years old, but 59 of them were under 10. Crime, poverty and corruption are integral parts of the appallingly poor, fabulously rich, gay, sad, innocent, decadent, magical and sensuous Brazil scene which Rambali ( French Blues: A Journey in Modern France ) depicts with affection, horror, intimacy and keen perception. As both a teller of tales and an incisive reporter, he covers the society across its many tiers, from the Indians of the denuded rain forests to the towers and slums of Rio, its sexual scene, intellectual and artistic life, festivals, history, politicians, media moguls, criminals and party-goers. Into this glittering fabric, Rambali weaves his love affair with a Sao Paulo university student and his perceptions of various friends and acquaintances. No conventional travelogue, this is a vivid profile of a vast, complex country. (Apr.)

Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (BF76.7.P96 1994)
Synopsis
This new, fourth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, the first revision since the 1983 edition, offers updated information in four key areas: reporting statistics; writing without bias; preparing manuscripts with a word processor for electronic production; and publishing research in accordance with ethical principles of scientific publishing.
Two goals shape the changes throughout the fourth edition: (a) to encourage authors to write about their research with specificity and (b) to write about their participants with sensitivity and accuracy.
Regular users of the Publication Manual will find the chapters on editorial style and manuscript preparation to be comfortably familiar and a bit easier to use than in previous editions. Manuscript format requirements are more flexible and enable authors to take advantage of default settings available on most word processors.
The Publication Manual gives you all the information you need about the process of publication---from organizing, writing, keying, and submitting your manuscript, to seeing the accepted manuscript through production and publication. Plus, this fourth edition raises awareness of ethics issues in publishing and of choosing accurate, sensitive words in describing people.

Around the world in eighty days (PZ7.V59Ar6 1992)
Synopsis
On a wager, the eccentric English gentleman Phileas Fogg accepts a challenge to circle the globe in 80 days. Follow Phileas and his faithful valet, Passepartout, in this fantastic adventure. 1 MP3 CD.
Annotation
In 1872 Phileas Fogg wins a bet by traveling around the world in seventy-nine days, twenty-three hours, and fifty-seven minutes.
Publishers Weekly
The sounds of a chugging steam engine and the orchestral movie-score strains that open this program set the stage for Dale's top-drawer performance of this much-loved adventure story. As one could set a clock by eccentric Phileas Fogg's daily routine, Fogg shocks everyone when he bets his personal fortune that he can complete the trip proposed in the book's title and then sets off on the wild trip. Listeners can almost envision a twinkle in Dale's eye as he delivers the lines of Fogg's traveling companion and man-servant Passepartout in an entertaining, though not over-the-top, French accent. Dale's vibrant, never-hurried reading is pleasantly punctuated by background music of the era at chapter breaks. A bonus afterword notes that this new edition pays homage to Listening Library's very first recording in 1955, of this same book. The added material also mentions the historical and social context of Verne's writings about other cultures, the tone of which would be considered insensitive or offensive by many people today. Ages 8-up. (Jan.)

國族主義(JC311.G28L61 2001)

論民主(JC423.D13L61 2003 )
