Summer-green. Rhizome stout, ascending to erect, covered with persistent stipe bases; scales thin, rusty-brown, ovate-lanceolate, 2-3 mm long 0.5 mm broad. Stipe much shorter than lamina, tufted, slender, stramineous sometimes purplish, 3-20 cm long; lamina narrowly lanceolate, deeply bipinnatifid to bipinnate (basal pinnules free), 10-20 cm long, 3-6 cm wide; all except upper pairs of pinnae reflexed, 2-4 cm long, sessile; pinnules cut nearly to costa, obtuse, dentate, adaxial basal pinnule enlarged, herbaceous, glabrous, fertile even in small leaves; ultimate segments oblong to elliptic, serrate or sharply lobed at margin; very short spines present on the adaxial side of costae. Sori medial or basal on lower veinlets; indusia oblong, J-shaped or reniform; margins somewhat erose.
Distribution: Taiwan, Japan, Shikoku and Kyushu (Yakushima), and S. Korea.
